If you do, do you get upset when pina colada and getting caught in the rain doesn’t like you back?
Do you spend your most precious moments with pina colada and getting caught in the rain or are you just tweeting and fb-ing about pina colada and getting caught in the rain?
Well that intro got rid of all the sane people, so its just you and me; so let me tell you about a funny experience I had this week with facebook.
First off, if you look for me there… its blank (true representation some would say), quite frankly I don’t like it very much. When I say “like” I mean “like” in the true sense of the word (to enjoy, be pleased by).
However, I do have a business page up there for 4donkeys, because I don’t dislike it that much that I can’t see the business benefits of being in front of a potential 800,000,000 people and I certainly don’t have any problem in creating and managing such pages for my clients. I just don’t want to share my entire existence with 800,000,000 people on a personal level, imagine the expense for birthdays and such!
So if I “Like” a page or person on facebook I am somewhat naively actually liking them, again in the Oxford English way…are you following me?
This is where it gets strange, because there is also a specific facebook definition of the word “like” and its different from what you might think. Here it is straight from the horses mouth:
“When you click Like on a Facebook Page, in an advertisement, or on content off of Facebook, you are making a connection. A story about your like will appear on your Wall (timeline) and may also appear in your news feed. You may be displayed on the Page you connected to, in advertisements about that Page, or in social plugins next to the content you like.
Facebook Pages you like may post updates to your news feed or send you messages. Your connection to the page may also be shared with apps on the Facebook Platform”
So to like something on facebook is much more about you than it is about the item you “liked”, its a way of associating yourself or business with another person or business and possibly spreading the word about your stuff to their contacts and vice-versa.
Its the vice versa bit that has rocked me a bit this week.
After joining a group on linked in, I added a link to the 4donkeys facebook page to a comment stream.
After that I was inundated with messages saying that so and so would like my page if I liked their’s first!
Bizarre behaviour I thought; why would I just like something in order for that something to like me back?
There was even a comment on the linked in group from someone who had been getting abuse from “likers” because they hadn’t liked them back quickly enough!
The main reason for this post today is to point out the abject futility of this kind of social media abuse and to point you to an amazing FREE resource I am sending to my email subscribers tomorrow in the Famous Friday Freebie email.
